Member Association Page - Woods Bay
Woods Bay :
- Wood’s Bay is a water-based community comprising both lakeshore and island residents. Located within the largest freshwater archipelago in North America, approximately 35km’s south of Parry Sound, the distinctive landscapes, island complexes, and biological features of Woods Bay, Moon River Basin and the adjacent Massassauga Provincial Park (“The Massassauga”) provide the foundation of our community. Collectively, this area is recognized in the Great Lakes Heritage Coast and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designations.
- Consisting of both Permanent and Seasonal residents, Woods Bay inhabitants feel a sense of duty to foster and protect those values which will best preserve the Wood’s Bay Neighbourhood as this unique place of our past memories and inspiration of new memories for generations to come. We place a special value on the historical and cultural features of our area, from early aboriginal people to exploration, the fur trade, logging industries, and present-day recreational use. This history, combined with our water-based access, has molded a distinctive community character and value system.
Local Issues and Projects
New Constitution:
Woods Bay Community Association undertook to update our Constitution this summer. The process, which was lead by a group of former Directors (Paul Robinson and John Gillies) was a year long undertaking that ended with the Constitution being affirmed by the general membership during the 2007 Annual General Meeting. The new constitution reflects the growing membership of the WBCA and provides direction for future Boards.
Standing Committee Structure:
With the new constitution in place, the WBCA Board of Directors has implemented a Standing Committee structure. The Standing Committee structure ensures that the entire WBCA stays abreast of the status of the many local issues pertinent to Woods Bay. Each of the four distinct committees, (Policy and Planning, Environment, Infrastructure and EMS, Social and Membership) are chaired by an existing Board Director and are made up of volunteers from the general membership.
Community Planning Process:
WBCA is working to undertake a formal Community Planning Process. With the increasing concern about water-based issues, including certain trends in shoreline development and massive declining water levels that negatively impact the fragile environment of our very unique water-access community, the WBCA is developing a vision and values document that is intended to guide future land and water-use planning and policies.

Location
Woods Bay is located on the East Coast of Georgian Bay. Situated approximately 35 Kilometers South of Parry Sound, Woods Bay is nestled approximately 5 Kilometers inland from the “Big water” of Georgian Bay and hosts two primary convenient small craft water access routes to Georgian Bay’s main channel. The most southerly boundary of Woods Bay leads into the mouth of the stunning Moon River basin and Moon River Water Falls - the heart of Georgian Bay’s Pickerel Spawning grounds.
Woods Bay can also be accessed by road via Healy Lake Road, which runs west off Muskoka Road 11 and through the Town of MacTier. Traveling down Healy Lake Road into Woods Bay, you will find the primary entry point into Ontario’s Massassauga Provincial Park. With all park sites accessible only by water, Massassauga Provincial Park is a protected sanctuary for the Massassauga rattlesnake and home to prairie warblers, five-line skink, hybrid toads, and map turtles.
