Member Association Page - South Channel

South Channel Association:

  • Squeezed between Parry Island and the mainland
to the south of Parry Sound, the South Channel
consists of a number of islands, narrow channels
and shallow bays. Cottage sites are generally more
wooded than further out on the Bay, and are
frequently owned by local residents who
discovered the area many years ago.

Local Issues and Projects

The narrow channels leading to and from the South Channel provide reduced water flushing, and exacerbate our water quality issues.

Our neighbors include the Wasauksing Band (Parry Island) and Massasauga Provincial Park, both of whom have initiated “land claims” that so far have been amicably resolved.

Boat traffic in our narrow channels is a concern. Speed, size and number of boats are an ongoing issues.

Water levels remain a major concern; the South Channel navigability itself is threatened by the current low levels, and many bays are suffering from reduced flushing and starving wetlands.

Accessible only by water, it is a protected sanctuary for the Massasauga rattlesnake and home to prairie warblers, five-line skink, hybrid toads and map turtles
